Volleyball’s West Coast Conference Adjusted Spring Schedule Now Available

WCC adjusts travel and opponents amid COVID-19 pandemic

SAN BRUNO, Calif – The adjusted 2020 West Coast Conference volleyball schedule is now available. The WCC announced the adjusted conference volleyball slate—a nine-week schedule that will now begin Jan. 26 2021 and conclude March 27, 2021—Friday morning.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the typical fall schedule was postponed to the spring of 2021. In addition to the adjusted start date, the WCC has also altered the opponent travel schedule. Instead of a home and away contest with each conference opponent, teams will face the same opponent twice in the same week at the same location. The typical Thursday-Saturday match setup has also been adjusted to Tuesday-Wednesday and Friday-Saturday matches.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to compete with this group, and give our seniors what they've worked so hard for!" Head Coach Diane Nelson said. "We have stayed focused on the positive, and this schedule is just that."

Gonzaga kicks off the season at home with a two-match series against San Diego Jan. 26 and 27. The reigning WCC Champions finished the 2019 season with a 17-1 mark in WCC play with a 25-6 overall record. USD finished the season ranked 21st in the nation and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round.

The Zags then travel for two-match series at Pacific (Feb. 2 & 3) and at BYU (Feb. 9 & 10). Last season, Gonzaga split matches with Pacific, losing 3-1 in Spokane on Oct. 12 but claiming a five-set victory over the Tigers in early November. BYU finished the 2019 season ranked 17th nationally with a 26-5 overall record including a 16-2 mark in WCC play, good for second.

Following the trip to Provo, Gonzaga returns home to host Saint Mary's (Feb. 16-17) and Loyola Marymount (Feb. 23 & 24) before traveling to Malibu, Calif., for matches at Pepperdine March 5 & 6. SMC, LMU and Pepperdine all finished in the top six in conference play a season ago, with Pepperdine finishing third, LMU fifth and the Gaels in sixth.

Following the matchup at Pepperdine, Gonzaga returns home to host Santa Clara (March 12 & 13) before traveling to San Francisco for two matches March 26 & 27.  The Zags close conference play against Portland in the lone home and away series split. GU will travel to Portland for a match March 26 before returning home to host the Pilots for Senior Day on March 27.

Gonzaga's non-conference schedule will be released at a later date.
