Mathews Becomes Gonzaga's First All-American

March 23, 2005

NEW YORK - Another in a season of firsts happened for the Gonzaga University women's basketball program on Wednesday as senior point guard Shannon Mathews became the first Bulldogs player to earn All-America honors from the Associated Press. Mathews was named an honorable mention selection after Gonzaga ended its season at 28-4 with a loss at Southwest Missouri State University in the second round of the Women's NIT.

Mathews was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year earlier this month after guiding the Bulldogs to a perfect 14-0 conference mark and the school's first national ranking in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll. Mathews finished her career first on the Gonzaga career assists list with 600 and seventh on the career scoring list with 1,318 points. A senior from Riverside, Calif., Mathews was a two-time first-team All-WCC selection.

Louisiana State junior forward Seimone Augustus was a unanimous choice on all 45 AP ballots to lead the first team. Joining her were Kendra Wecker of Kansas State University, Monique Currie of Duke University, Jessica Davenport of Ohio State University and Sandora Irvin of Texas Christian University.
