Ten GU Teams Earn NCAA APR Public Recognition Award

GU had the only WCC men’s and women’s basketball teams to earn the award

INDIANPOLIS The NCAA released its Annual Progress Rate Public Recognition Awards and Gonzaga Athletics was well-represented with a league-high 10 teams earning the honor, NCAA officials announced Wednesday.

"Our athletic programs continue to focus on academics as one of the three pillars of success: classroom, community and competition; and the results are outstanding," Director of Athletics Mike Roth said. "We are so proud of how our student-athletes strive to be the best they can be, and we recognize that it comes with a lot of hard work and the support of great faculty, staff and coaches."

Based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate, teams posting APR scores in the top 10 percent of their sport earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2014-2015, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.

For Gonzaga, 10 of its 15 APR-eligible teams were publicly recognized for this achievement, which marks the sixth straight year that GU has had at least 10. The men's and women's basketball teams were the only two in their respective sports honored among West Coast Conference schools.

In addition to the basketball teams, GU's men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track, men's and women's golf, men's soccer and women's tennis also received the NCAA Public Recognition Award. The women's golf team has now earned the honor in all 14 years of the Public Recognition program, one of just 73 teams nationally.

Gonzaga's 10 teams recognized also gives the Zags the highest number of teams honored in the WCC. The next closest was Santa Clara's eight and then Pepperdine and San Diego's five.
